Customer Service Contenders: Dimdim vs. EventBrite

Posted in :  Community & Conversation

I nearly fall off my chair when I have a bad customer service experience. It seems reprehensible that in the age of Zappos,В JetBlue, Apple and even old schoolers like L.L. Bean leading the customer service charge that being treated bad for no reason exists at all.

This week, I had to contact two companies for very different purposes but the customer service inquiries were similar. I needed help and I needed it fast. The experiences were night and day. The companies, EventBrite and [More...]

Turning Marketers into Social Media Champs for Nonprofits in Connecticut

Yesterday Fathom and CT Nonprofits kicked off our “Social Media Champs” certificate series for nonprofit Marketers. We have a really interesting mix in the class with organizations focused on a variety of areas in health, hunger, education, community, youth and rehabilitation.

We’ve structured the sessions so that we have one class per month. Our next class is in November and then our final class is in December. We promoted the class to people who are already using social networking platforms (Facebook, etc.) because we didn’t want to spend time in the class answering the “why” question. THE BIG ZINGER!

Observation. One of the side benefits of being an active twitter user is that if forces you to trim down your ideas to the bare essentials and still build impact into a short phrase. With all of us facing information overload, having headlines disseminated into digestible chunks has its merits. Like a nod to the news industry, with a big fat block-type Zinger!

The Art of Listening, CCSU Seniors Respond

Posted in :  Community & Conversation

I recently had the pleasure to address Professor David Fearon’s Business Degree Seniors at Central Connecticut State University about the challenges they will face entering the current job market. The subject of my discussion with them was “The Art of Listening” and how, with some tools and concepts to help them, they can be better prepared to meet the challenges of the current state of business. After the lecture, the students were asked questions about the subject and their interpretations, and was I pleasantly surprised by how well [More...]

Going negative can be positive but results may vary

Back in the early 70s I was fascinated by the book Subliminal Seduction which made a big splash by purporting to expose the nefarious techniques that the advertising industry was using to get us to buy, buy, buy. Everything from airbrushing (how quaint) silhouettes of naked women onto ice cubes (maybe that’s where my teenage fascination came from) to imprinting the word “S-E-X-” in Ritz Crackers. Of course these claims have been roundly denied and James Vicary’s infamous “Drink Coca-Cola” movie theater study has been soundly debunked.

Now comes a study from [More...]
